Apple Device Configuration

There are a couple of options to choose from when it comes to configuring Apple iPhones, iPods, or iPads. iTunes is one option, and it is the option that most people are familiar with. While it is a great tool for downloading music, videos and pictures, it only offers some very limited capabilities for device configuration. The iPhone Configuration Utility (ICU) is a Windows-based configuration tool that enables administrators to create, maintain and push configuration profiles, as well as install applications.

Another tool that is not as well-known is the Apple Configurator. This application is similar to the ICU, but is IOS-based and provides some additional functionality. The Apple Configurator only runs on Apple computers, and provides all of the same functionality as the ICU, but it also allows administrators to update to the latest version of IOS and backup and restore a device image in the same sync session. Most importantly, the Configurator can simultaneously update up to 30 devices attached via USB.

The Apple Configurator can be downloaded from the App Store.
